About CAPS
What is a Certified Aging in Place Specialist?
A Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS) is a professional who has been trained and certified by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) to help individuals modify their homes to accommodate their changing needs as they age. CAPS professionals have a deep understanding of the aging process and are knowledgeable in a range of topics related to home modifications, including building codes, accessibility, and product specifications.
CAPS professionals work with clients to assess their current living situation and recommend modifications that will allow them to remain in their homes safely and comfortably as they age. These modifications may include ideas that involve reorganizing furniture, sign cueing, and clear markings; all the way to more involved installations like strategically placing grab bars, widening doorways, lowering countertops, or adding stair lifts or ramps. CAPS professionals can also help clients design new homes or remodel existing ones with aging in place in mind.
By working with a CAPS professional, older adults can often avoid the need to move to assisted living facilities or nursing homes and can continue living independently in their own homes for as long as possible.
